Roles For Holes: Soil Shake Test

Not all soil is alike. This activity leads students through a soil “shake test” to learn about the amounts of sand, clay, and silt found in different soil samples. The activity connects soil particle size to the ability of water to move through the soil. Students also act out the differences between the three soil components and how water moves between them with a goal to connect the contents of soil to its ability to make water available for plants to grow.
