Keeping the soil healthy is one of a farmer’s most important jobs. But what is soil? Students will dig in and explore different soil samples – discovering many living things like roots, fungus, earthworms, mites, insects, and leaves. This activity asks students to observe, describe and read about the characteristics of soil.

Subject area standards alignment: Science, Environmental Education, Agriculture

NOTE: We recommend teaching “Get To Know Your Soil,” “Roles for Holes: Soil Shake Test” (Coming Soon), and “Soil On The Run” in that order for scaffolding of material.
