This in-depth Tractor and Farm Safety Course provides youth with essential training in agricultural safety, hazard awareness, and safe tractor operation. Participants receive classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and supervised driving practice to meet Wisconsin Act 455 and U.S. Department of Labor Agriculture Hazards Occupation Order. Upon successful completion of written and driving exams, participants earn the required certification for legal tractor operation in applicable work settings.
AGENDA
Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM: Educational sessions covering: safe tractor and implement operation; farm safety techniques, including how to reduce injury risk and identifying potentially hazardous situations; tractor instruments and controls, maintenance and safe inspections; proper use of tractors and tractor limitations
Monday (June 15), 8:00 AM-12:00PM: Driving practicum, scheduled in half-hour increments.
Optional Driving Practice: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after class.
REQUIREMENTS
Mandatory to attend all sessions
Must pass written exam with 70% minimum score
Must pass practical driving examination demonstrating safe operation of tractor
Youth must be at least 12 years old at the time of the class to participate.
All participants must be physically large enough to reach and operate all tractor controls while fully seated in the tractor seat.
Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate attire for weather and operating farm machinery.
DETAILS
Cost: $75 per participant
Age: Designed for youth 12-17 years of age who will be operating tractors or self-propelled implements of husbandry on public roads under direction of their parent or guardian for work-related to their family farm operation and/or 14-15 years of age who will be employed or working without pay on a farm other than their family farm and completes the requirements for a federal certificate of training. Priority registration for participants 12-15 years of age.
