Greenhouse Update: Growing with Partners & Planting

Exciting things are sprouting in the new Greenhouse, generously sponsored by Carol & Dick Okray, at Food + Farm Exploration Center! Since our last update, we’ve made incredible progress toward creating a year-round learning space that brings agriculture to life for all ages. From installing irrigation systems to preparing tables and crop beds, this project is moving forward with the support of an inspiring group of volunteers and our team — and the vision is starting to bloom.

Powered by Partnership & Community

In late May, we hosted a greenhouse volunteer event that brought together a powerhouse group of local organizations, all eager to dig in and lend a hand. This kind of collaboration with partners like Portage County Business Council, Inc., Simplicity Credit Union, Sentry, Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin, RR Donnelley, Okray Family Farms, Heartland Farms, Inc., University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, Lineage, and Skyward is what makes our mission possible. Their efforts — from plumbing prep to structural support — helped lay the literal and figurative foundation for our greenhouse’s next phase. We’re grateful for their time, energy, and belief in our work.

What We’re Growing

As we move from construction to cultivation, our team is preparing to plant a diverse mix of Wisconsin crops to support educational programming and create hands-on learning opportunities. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s growing:

Herbs & Aromatics

  • Lavender

  • Thyme

  • Rosemary

  • Basil

  • Mint

Vegetables & Focus Crops

  • Sweet Corn

  • Norland & Jelly Potatoes

  • Chantey & Bryillance Carrots

  • Beets

  • Cucumbers

  • Onions

  • Beans

  • Peas

  • Tomatoes

These crops will serve as the foundation for new engaging experiences — showcasing plant systems, seed growth & innovation, plant wellness and sustainable agriculture while teaching us how our food goes from field (or greenhouse!) to fork.

Laying the Groundwork

Over the next few weeks, our team and volunteers will continue:

  • Installing irrigation systems and fertigation setups

  • Building and marking crop beds

  • Seeding, planting, and maintaining an evolving crop plan

  • Prepping educational stations, signage, sanitation, and observation tools

  • Supporting beneficial insect programs and crop health systems

Each of these pieces helps us fulfill our mission: to educate current and future generations about agricultural innovation and sustainability. None of this happens without helping hands from donors and volunteers.

Help Us Grow: Exciting Volunteer Opportunities

As we gear up for our first plantings and programs, we’re looking for volunteers to join us. If you’re passionate about agriculture, education, or simply want to contribute to something meaningful, we’d love to have your support. Volunteer tasks range from greenhouse prep and planting to event setup and educational support. All experience levels are welcome, and we have opportunities throughout the exploration center for all interests.
